This article will guide you to update the firmware of your router using the NETGEAR genie software.
Note: Please make sure that you are using the latest NETGEAR genie software on your computer. This steps are only applicable if you are using a router that is supported or compatible with the NETGEAR genie software. Please visithttp://www.netgear.com/landing/genie/routers.aspx for the list of the supported routers. You can download the latest NETGEAR genie software on this http://www.netgear.com/landing/genie/.
To update router firmware using the genie software:
- Open the NETGEAR genie software and click on Router settings.
Note: You can either click on the Router Settings on the left hand panel or on the "Click here" link under the Router Settings thumbnail. - On the Router Settings page, you will be required to type in your username and password for the router.
Note: The username and password is case sensitive. The default username is admin while password is the default password. If the default password is not working, you might have changed the password to access the configuration page. Please try other passwords that you might have changed to. Otherwise, a factory reset is needed to restore the router to factory defaults. You can perform a factory reset by following the steps on this http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9665/~/restoring-a-netgear-router-to-factory-default-settings. - After logging in, you will be redirected to the Wireless Settings of your router. Click on the arrows on the top-right corner to see the tab for Router Update.

Note: If there is no firmware update available for your router, this message will show up stating that you have the latest firmware.
- If the genie detects a new firmware for your router, it will show you the information about it.
Note: Clicking on the message "A new firmware upgrade is available. Click here to get it." will redirect you on the same firmware information page. - After hitting Next, the genie will say that the firmware check is completed and it will provide the instructions on how to manually update the firmware. It will also automatically open a web browser that will show you the router login page.
- After logging in to the router settings page, click on the "A router firmware update is available" message on the page to initiate the update process.
- The router will now attempt to connect to the NETGEAR servers to gather the information about the new firmware. After it is done, it will show you the details of the new firmware. Click on Yes to proceed with the update.
- The router will now download the new firmware and it will proceed with uploading the firmware once the it is finished with the download process.
- Once the upload process is complete, the router will automatically reboot. Once the router is ready, you will be redirected to the NETGEAR genie settings page. You can check if the firmware version loaded on your router on the top-right corner of the page is now updated.
