A Girl at My Door (2014) is director July Jung’s first full-length feature film and the work that has placed her on the map of today’s most exciting South Korean auteurs. Produced by Lee Chang-dong of Secret Sunshine (2007) and Poetry (2010), the film features international superstar Bae Doo-Na (Air Doll, 2009; The Host, 2006; Cloud Atlas, 2012) in the role of Yŏngnam, a lesbian police woman who is outed and sent to an island. There, she meets abused female teenager Dohŭi (Kim Saeron), and a friendship blossoms against the background of crime, murder, and the squalor of a rural fishing village. The film was officially selected in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in 2014, where it received nominations for both Queer Palm and Golden Camera awards. It also won the 2015 OUTtv People’s Choice Award for Best Feature at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. A graduate of the Korean National University of Arts, director Jung has previously been acclaimed in South Korea for short films such as A Man under the Influenza (2007) and The Dog That Came into My Flashlight (2010).
